Summary

We process your personal data to provide you with access to our online courses, to create a community connecting students and enterprises, and to analyze the users’ activities on our website so that we can improve our courses and website.

Pursuant to Art. 13 of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (“GDPR”) we provide you with the following information regarding how we process your personal data.


1. Who is the data controller?

The data controller is the Italian National Research Council (CNR), based in Piazzale Aldo Moro, 7, 00185 Roma, Italy, through the Institute of Information Science and Technologies “A. Faedo” (ISTI). CNR is the central node of the SoBigData infrastructure and determines the purposes and means of personal data processing through SoBigData’s websites.

2. Why do we process your personal data?

This website is supplied by the SoBigData Research Infrastructure to provide online learning activities for students, researchers, and other interested subjects. The Academy is one of the services accessible with the account created on the SoBigData e-infrastructure (https://sobigdata.d4science.org/). This policy refers only to the data processing activities carried out on the Academy’s website. 

We always process the following data: name and surname, IP address, e-mail address, password, username, test results, log data and information about the users’ activities on the website.

We can also process the following data, if you insert them in our website: your city, Country, timezone, language (English is the default one), profile picture, interests, ID number, your institution, department, telephone number, address, working area, reasons to follow the course, video uploaded on the forum, other documents you might upload on our website.

We process your personal data for the following purposes: 

  1. to allow you to use your profile on the Academy so we can provide you access to our online courses and learning activities, 
  2. to create a community connecting students and enterprises, 
  3. to analyze the users’ activities on our website in order to improve our courses and website.

Such personal data shall be processed in a lawful, correct, relevant manner, limited to what is necessary to achieve the purposes of the processing, only for the time necessary to achieve the purposes for which they were collected and in accordance with the principles set out in art. 5 of EU Regulation 2016/679.


Specific security measures are observed to prevent data loss, unlawful or incorrect use and unauthorized access.


3. What is the legal basis for processing your personal data?

We process your personal data on the following legal basis (listed below for each purpose specified in point 2):

  1. Processing is necessary to allow you to use our services.
  2. You provide us with your consent when you access the community.
  3. we process your data on the basis of our legitimate interest to improve our services.


4. Provision of data

Provision of your personal data for the purposes of point a) is necessary for use of the services offered by the Data Controller; should you refuse to provide your personal data, you will be unable to use such services.

When our data processing activities are based on your consent, you can always withdraw it using the option that you can find on your personal profile, deleting your posts and your interactions within the community.


5. Option to object to the processing

You have the right to object to our processing activities which we carry out on the basis of our legitimate interests. 


6. For how long do we process your personal data?

Your personal data is processed until you delete your account, except for your log data which we keep stored for 6 months for analytical purposes.

7. Data recipients and international transfers

Our servers are based in Italy at the University of Pisa, partner of SoBigData, so your data are only shared with the University of Pisa for this purpose and are not transferred outside of the European Economic Area. 


8. Your rights

You have the right to access your personal data, and, when applicable, the right to correct it, erase it or restrict its processing, as well as the right to data portability and to object to processing of personal data in specific cases.

Here is a list of the cookies used on our website:

  • _ga: this cookie is used to distinguish unique users by assigning a randomly generated number as a client identifier. It is included in each page request on a site and is used to calculate visitor, session, and campaign data for the site's analytics reports. Hosted on the University of Pisa's servers, by default, it is set to expire after 2 years.
  • MoodleSession: this cookie is a strictly necessary cookie used to maintain the login session for the user in Moodle. It ensures continuity and preserves the user session state when navigating the site. 
  • MOODLEID: this optional cookie helps remember your username and password in your browser, so that when you return to the website, the login fields will already be filled with your username and password. The cookie, installed by Moodle, lasts until you delete or easily deactivate it in your browser settings.
